Aware Level passing levels.JPG

Training games are constraint based practice games that will help facilitate learning, retention and transfer of skills practiced.

Each game will have an explanation of how it’s played as well as a rating to see what level you are performing. All shots well be given either a pass or fail score, a passing score is when the golf ball comes to rest within the acceptable distance from the target. Our goal should be to get to the aware level in each game, if you can do this you will be able to perform the skills needed on the course while under pressure.

Tee Shots

HOGAN

Hogan said that he would play 36 holes each day.. 18 of them being on the range hitting every single shot the same way he would do on the course. In this game we will imagine you’re teeing off on the course of your choice and work through the tee shots needed. Try and create and idea of the hole with the range in front of you . Thinking of the game slalom, picture one of the gates as the end of the fairway on the left and one of the gates of the fairway on the right.

Slalom.JPG

SLALOM

In the game slalom you will tell yourself what slalom gate you will be trying to hit through and then attempt the shot. The shot doesn’t have to be pretty but it must pass through that gate as seen with the black line going through all. This will result in a passing score.

Clubs needed: Driver or Any

Approach Shots

BUBBA

In this game you will attempt to hit 9 different shots with an 8 iron. The trajectory will be low, normal, high and with each shot shape of hook, straight, and slice. For a passing score you must say what your are going to hit before you attempt the shot and it must have the desired outcome. A straight shot may have a small amount of movement but must not move more than 2 yards in either way.

20 Balls.JPG

20 BALLS

In this game you will attempt to hit at each target in the order above with only 20 Balls. A satisfactory shot would be if the ball comes to rest within a 15 yard radius of selected target.

Clubs needed: Match the target

Swings: 20 or less

Real Life.JPG

REAL LIFE

In this game you’ll hit eight shots to 8 different targets. Start by dropping the ball, you will have the opportunity to pick the target of your choice to hit at. Understand what the lie allows you to do and decide the target that will match the best. No matter what, you must focus on the shot at hand and not about what future shots and what could or could not happen. A satisfactory shot would be if the ball comes to rest within a 15 yard radius of selected target.

FLAG IT.JPG

FLAG IT

With this game we will be looking to be aggressive and score, most of the time with these distances we get too lax and think we will rely on tempo when in reality we get nervous and end up throwing the club. Pick the target, decide what shot you want to hit and commit. A passing score will be if the ball comes to rest within a 5 yard radius of the selected target.

Short Game

All Day.JPG

ALL DAY

Here you will set a goal for yourself by picking a level. Each level has a number of balls that must be hit into the circle before you may move on. See how long it takes you. A passing score will be if the ball comes to rest within a 5 yard radius of the selected target.

Clubs needed: Wedges

No Man's Land.JPG

NO MAN’S LAND

No man’s land is an area you encounter very often on our eagle golf course. Here you will hit all the clubs in your bag except your putter into NML. A passing score will be if the ball comes to rest on the green and but not past the flag.

Clubs needed: All but putter

Swings: 13

Hold On.JPG

HOLD ON

In this game you will hit 4 shots with the only goal of holding the green from these difficult areas. Too many times do we attempt to hit a crazy hero shot in thoughts of throwing it to tap in distance which usually results in a super blade or fat chunk.. Realistically how many times do you practice this shot and then look at the result and think if you could make it. Place the ball in marked hitting areas and access the angles of the shot that will best help you hold the green.

In your life.JPG

IN YOUR LIFE

You will play 5 different holes. Each hole you will start at least 30 feet from the hole. Your goal will be to hit the ball leaving yourself inside a 5 foot radius which will be a safe area, this will result in a pass. If you are outside the 5 foot safe area you are in the Fail zone , you may attempt the putt for a last ditch effort to pass the hole. If the putt is missed you have failed the hole.

Clubs needed: Putter

Swings: As few as possible

Throw Up Zone.jpg

THE NICK ZONE- 14

(throw up zone)

Many players on the PGA Tour call the area from 3-5 feet the Throw up Zone.. In 2005, Tiger Woods had 485 putts on tour of 5 feet or less. He missed none of them. Pick a 5 foot putt of your liking and see how many consecutive putts you can make. Set a goal number, then break it. This will be a record holder named game, so whoever has the most consecutive putts made will be honored.

Clubs needed: Putter

Swings: 486

On Course Training Games

The Test.JPG

THE TEST

Are you prepared? Let’s see .. Each hole you will have simple constraints that must be followed. Following the directions and finishing the hole with a score of par or better will result in a pass.

#1 Par 4- You must not hit the green with your first shot.

#2 Hold the green in 3- You must hit your tee shot on the left side of the tree blocking the fairway.

#3 Par 5- Your tee shot must not end up in 18 fairway.

GAME PLAN

This game is only for those who would like to play their best. The process is simple but will you follow it?? Decide what course you will play and what holes. You will then write down on your card before you tee off what clubs you will use on each hole. Think of what would be your best tee shot you can hit paired with the smartest approach shot.

COMMIT to the GAME PLAN, EXECUTE the shot, collect trophies.

7 IRON CHALLENGE

This is one of my favorite games and one of the best ways to understand how to really navigate around the golf course. All you need is a 7 iron and 1 ball. This will give you a different outlook on how to play each hole.

HIT IT AGAIN

Is a game where are you play against another person and on each hole you each have the opportunity to have your opponent play one of their shots over. This really helps you focus on each and every shot because the thought of having to hit a great shot over. There is some strategy involved but in our perfect world we are prepared to hit any shot.

LILLY PAD

In the game Lillypad the goal will be to have the ball stop on the next Teebox in front of you. There are two variations, if you are walking it is fun to hit one tee box forward play it as it lies to the next one and so on . If you’re in a cart and you are needing to waste some time or would just like to play you can hit one ball to the next tee box in front of you and then you will skip that one and go to the further one until you run out of tee boxes.
